Following Muse all the way into over-the-top production mode comes My Chemical Romance, who previewed a portion of their new concept album, The Black Parade, from the top of one of New York's tallest buildings during the MTV VMA preshow. The new album is produced by Rob Cavullo (Green Day) and they are channeling Green Day in both terms of a concept album as well as a punkish sound. But the song they debuted had all the pomp and bombasity of Queen--the song came complete with a Brian May guitar solo, a boys choir dressed in skeleton outifits, military drummers, and neo-romantic military uniforms in black with white piping and brocade for the band. Singer Gerard Way has bleached his hair, to better channel "the patient," the subject of their concept piece.
The song collapsed a bit halfway through and I lost interest but it seems to be yet another signal of a return to massive overproduction in rock music. Time to break out some ELO, and listen to how it's really done!!
