A Thin Red Line
This stencil was on a fence in the middle of the Fuller campus--good to see some solidarity and, I must admit, it came as a nice surprise. The silent strength and protest of the monks has received a lot of attention in the press. I have read more than a couple of articles that point to the continued influen
ce religion plays in cultural life. I like the fact that the Burmese monks walked rather than spoke--their "rhetoric" was their praxis-feet to the streets. There are also a few interesting sites thinking about how to harness the energy and try and make something happen. This map showing the locations of the protests is another example of how
much new technology is playing in all of this. If you think back to the Tienanmen Square protests--they had faxes!--that was the cutting edge technology for communication. Now it's e-mail, digital cameras, Google maps etc. connecting us all in a moment, to the moment.

We were reflecting on and praying about this last night. Currently a lot of the Sanctus1 bods are sporting red strips of cloth around their wrists as sign of solidarity.
PS Hope we can hook up when M and I are over your way whilst seeing Olive and John/ California?
