we dont need another hero

A few blogs back I was writing about my revelation about film and why it is that the big-tent, summer blockbuster popcorn movies leave me pretty cold, in fact, I was thinking about how little cinema overall, moves me these days. I said that I had had a bit of a revelation, more of an awareness really, about what the issue was. In a word, it's heroes. I'm over them, I'm over heroes and superheroes because they have become a ubiquitous, default answer to anything and everything, we throw around the word hero much the same way we do 'genius' and when everyone becomes a superhero or hero nobody is a superhero or hero, and it strikes me that in virtually every film we see, the central character is either hero or superhero, especially in the summer movie session.

This was driven home to me again on the Santa Monica pier the other night. I was handed a flyer by a guy, here it is,

The last thing Jesus is, is a superhero, but given our cultural fascination with them, it should come as no surprise that the association is made. There was a little issue earlier in the summer over a movie-advertising campaign directed at church pastors, essentially, attempting to get churches to buy movie tickets by turning the re-booted Superman story into the Jesus story--a stupid move if ever there was one. Well, you could could make it a Jesus story, but it would have to be a very different Jesus than the one it was pitched to be. If Superman was Jesus, then his planet (heaven?) was destroyed and his father (God the Father?) died--so we are talking about a post-metaphysical, death-of-god-jesus perhaps--you catch my drift, I hope...to tie the story of jesus to a comic book does no good to the telling of the tale, however much you may nuance it.

But my a/hero posture isn't about religion alone, it's about culture and society. It seems to me that the cultural trajectory is shifting and perhaps our need of and for hero/superhero figures need some re-examination. It has undoubtedly shifted, we long ago moved away from the good guy/bad guy idea of interpreting heroes. Heroes have become increasingly complex, they are no longer 'all good' they are complicated, conflicted, paradoxical, aware of their shortcomings etc. We are also increasingly aware that heroes cannot save us, and that we must learn to save ourselves--the old ways are changing in the world, of this much I am sure, and with it the ways in which we handle those changes. But we still hold on to this idea of the hero/saviour figure who rescues us when we can't rescue ourselves. It seems to me that we might be coming to the end of heroes as a means of identifying our sense of ourselves. The emergence of the current crop of movie marquee figures are virtually all super-heroes--batman, superman, etc. drawn from a particular time and space and representing America's hopes, dreams and fears at a certain point in the cultural history, it could well be that these markers, these values if you will, need to be looked at to see if those are still the best way to understand or think about ourselves in the changing world we find ourselves in.

I think that the hero/superhero figure represents the 'higher self,' a view of what it means to be human that has given shape to a lot of thinking about what it means to be human, except that I don't believe that the higher self exists, I think it is an idea whose viability is increasingly challenged by the newer ways we are considering what makes us human, be it neuroscience or technology or shifting understandings of the nature of the self--we perceive ourselves a bit differently today and this 'higher self' thing smacks of a time gone by. What that means to me is that we cannot rely as heavily on the heroic any longer, as it is tied to a mythic sense of what it means to be human, a sense that I think is no longer completely helpful.

I realize that I tread a fine line, I am not writing off the idea of the hero or the heroic completely, but we seem to have become obsessed--just incline your ear to the use of words like 'hero' and 'heroic' in the media, you'll be surprised.

The obsession with heroes in cinema has been countered by the rise of the anti-hero on TV in the past decade-from Tony Soprano to Walter White, from Dexter to True Blood. Television seems to have traded the hero favourably for the anti-hero and it seems to make for more compelling watching, at least for me. But that is still a move away from where I am thinking.

Getting back briefly to the religious aspect of all this. I find that the reliance upon the heroic in religion, the thirst for 'super-power' etc., doesn't resonate with an increasingly growing segment of the populace (not all of course--it continues to resonate with many as we all find appeal in different approaches). But for me it ends up creating a strange cul-de-sac out of belief/believing, faith/faithlessness and makes a bit of a mockery of religion and the Gospel in my mind, but that's just me.

Kester takes up some of this in his book After Magic. I'm with him on one of the book's principle angles, that the renunciation of 'special powers' by the hero figure holds a clue to the finding of his or her true humanity. I think for me, the move we must also make is a move away from a dependence upon the heroic figure. Perhaps I could also say that the idea of the 'lone figure' who alters the course of history, be it a created, cinematic version, or the real thing, is something of a dead-end in our increasingly complex world. The 'gods' can't help us, we are on our own, left to our own devices--the remedy for our challenges doesn't lie with some magical, mystical power, it lies in connecting with what it means to be human and acting accordingly.

I think this is me thinking out loud as much as anything else, and I can see flaws in my thinking even as I write, so I'll probably tease this out a little more over the coming weeks, so stay tuned if you're interested, and if you think I'm just being a twat...you're probably right.
