A really compelling piece of art by the wonderfully named, Barthel Bruyn the Elder. It is called Portrait of a Man, produced in sometime in the 16th century. On the reverse side of the protrait is another work, that features a human skull in a niche--the painting is meant to convey the idea that death is conventionally hidden from us, but it lurks in the back ground always.

Takashi Murakami has an exhibit opening in Gagosian Hong Kong entitled Flowers and Skulls-wish I could go and see it in person, I love his stuff.
